Prep football: Superior rallies to down Sparta in overtime

Apr. 25—Carter Fonger scored his third touchdown of the game in overtime and quarterback Kaden Kimmes converted the two-point conversion as Superior rallied from 14 points down to defeat Sparta 22-21 on Friday night in Sparta, Wisconsin.

Nick Kent's 24-yard touchdown run and a 66-yard scoring pass from Brett Stuessel to Payton Johnson gave Sparta a 14-0 lead in the third quarter before the Spartans (4-1) rallied to win their penultimate game of the delayed football season.

Fonger scored from 3 yards out later in the third quarter and then again from the 1 in the fourth. Kell Piggott's two extra points forced overtime.

Kent scored from the 11 on Sparta's possession. After a roughing the kicker penalty, Superior had to start on the 40-yard line. The Spartans converted on fourth down before Fonger responded with a 7-yard TD run and Kimmes got the ensuing game-winning two-point run.

Kimmes finished 14-for-23 passing for 131 yards, Fonger had 20 carries for 73 yards and Jake Edwards caught seven passes for 64 yards to lead Superior. Fonger led the defensive effort with 17 tackles, including three for loss.
