Prep boys basketball: Mr. Basketball watchlist announced

Jan. 16—DULUTH — Three local basketball standouts were announced as part of the Minnesota Mr. Basketball selection committee's watchlist for 2023-24.

Cherry's Isaac Asuma, Esko's Koi Perich and Hermantown's Abe Soumis were all part of the 35-player list that included players from across Minnesota, regardless of class.

Asuma, the top basketball prospect in recent memory from the Iron Range, is a 6 foot, 3 inch point guard that has led Cherry to the Class A semifinals each of the past two seasons. A Minnesota recruit, Asuma was the

2023 News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year

and is averaging 19.6 points per game on 58% field goal shooting.

, is a

two-time News Tribune All-Area Football Player of the Year

. He has led Esko to the Section 7AA final each of the last three years.

Soumis, a 6-4 forward for Hermantown, has broken the single-game scoring record twice this season for the 12-5 Hawks and is the program's all-time leading rebounder. He is averaging 29.3 points, 16.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game through 17 games.

The list will be trimmed to the top 10 on Feb. 26 and the final five will be announced on March 17.

The 2024 Minnesota Mr. Basketball will be announced following the state tournaments in late March.
