PREP BASKETBALL: Cullman topples Hartselle 54-42 for area tourney title

Feb. 7—Cullman's varsity boys were unable to celebrate last year's championship-clinching triumph on their home floor.

Following an impressive outing on Wednesday, though, the Bearcats made this season's accomplishment every bit worth the wait for their faithful fans.

Sam Duskin and Brodie Banister racked up 11 points apiece, Jake Dorough joined them in double figures with 10 and No. 7 Cullman took down Hartselle 54-42 to notch the Class 6A, Area 14 Tournament crown and improve to 21-8 overall under coach Stu Stuedeman.

"We've been working hard all season and it's been a grind," Dorough said. "We've had our ups and downs, but we practiced hard and battled and got it done. I'm proud of the team and everyone involved in this win tonight."

The Bearcats led throughout most of the matchup, recording 15-8, 28-22 and 41-32 advantages at the quarter breaks and never allowing the Tigers to put together a run over the final 16 minutes.

Kase Nixon and Colton Echols netted seven points apiece, while Sam Dorough and Evan Wilson each registered four to round out the scoring for the Black and Gold.

Duskin (MVP), Banister and Jake Dorough, meanwhile, all landed spots on the All-Tournament Team.

Cullman will host Lee-Huntsville in a sub-regional tilt this Saturday. The Bearcats, who won their third straight area tournament, are also seeking their third consecutive trip to the Northwest Regional Tournament.

"We just have to keep the edge we've had the past few games and not get comfortable," Dorough said.
