Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker's father drowns in lake near Brazilian holiday home

Alisson Becker, the 2019 FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper, is mourning the loss of his father after an accident in Brazil.

Jose Becker drowned in a lake near his holiday home in southern Brazil on Wednesday, local police authorities told Reuters and ESPN. He was 57.

Liverpool gave its condolences to their 28-year-old goalkeeper on Twitter, with well wishes from fans, players, teams and the Premier League in the comments. Becker is also the Brazilian national team keeper.

Jose Becker was swimming at a dam on his property near Rincao do Inferno in the State of Rio Grande do Sul a few hours from the eastern coast. He was declared missing around 5 p.m. local time, per ESPN, and a fire department team was sent to assist in the search. Becker's body was located at around 11:59 p.m., per ESPN, and no foul play is suspected.

Alisson, regarded as the best men's goalkeeper in the world, came to Liverpool in the summer of 2018 from Roma. The club has won UEFA Champions League, Premier League and Club World Cup since then. His younger brother, Muriel, is a goalkeeper for Fluminense in Brazil.

The brothers each played for Brazil's Internacional, which released a statement.

“It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker’s death, the father of our ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel," the club wrote, via Reuters.

Liverpool is scheduled to host Sheffield United on Sunday.
