Predators' Trahan signs with Marlins

Dec. 8—Thursday morning felt a bit surreal to Fox Creek senior Callie Trahan.

She wasn't always sure that she would get this far, but there she sat at the signing table with family, friends, classmates and coaches there to celebrate as she put pen to paper to play volleyball at Virginia Wesleyan University.

Trahan, a three-team All-Region selection who capped her senior year as the Region 3-AA Player of the Year, a Class AA All-State selection and a North-South All-Star, made it official by signing after committing a couple of months ago.

"I definitely liked that it was kind of out of the way, something that I didn't expect, but when I got there I just felt like it was home," she said of VWU, an NCAA Division III member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. "I love the coaches. I love the players. I just felt like I belong there and that I can really be an asset to the team."

Trahan has been an asset in many ways for the region-champion Predators, leading the team this season in kills (258) and service aces (76) while finishing a close second in digs (266). She said she loves playing everywhere on the court, but at the collegiate level she'll follow her passion as a defensive specialist.

Also a gifted student — she was one of Fox Creek's winners of the Heisman High School Scholarship — she intends to study biology with plans to go into nursing.

Trahan was named to the All-Region 5-AAA team in both her sophomore and junior seasons, and as a senior she earned top honors in Region 3-AA while helping lead the Predators to a region championship.

"My favorite part is definitely being a senior and being able to lead these girls," she said. "They have such a passion for volleyball, and it really pours into me every single practice and every single game. I'm definitely going to miss them, but I cherish all the memories I had with them this year and I wish them the best of luck going forward."

Waiting for her in Virginia Beach is a program also coming off a successful season. The Marlins went 20-8 this season and won the regular-season conference championship, and the team is set to return multiple all-conference underclassmen.

"I'm definitely looking forward to starting my volleyball career and just starting off on a good note and meeting girls up there," she said. "I know it's a great opportunity for me and I know this is something I've been looking forward to my entire life, so I'm ready to get it started."
