After the Knicks emerged Sunday afternoon as a trade candidate to land Javale McGee from Los Angeles, the Lakers center is reportedly headed for a different destination. The Lakers agreed Sunday evening to a trade that sends McGee to the Cleveland Cavaliers, per a report by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Five minutes later, Wojnarowski reported that the Lakers were finalizing a deal with free agent center Marc Gasol. SNY NBA insider Ian Begley reported earlier Sunday that the Knicks were a potential landing spot for McGee, with the Lakers' pursuit of Gasol in mind.
McGee, 32, signed a two-year deal for $8.2 million with the Lakers last July. McGee reportedly exercised a $4.2 million player option Thursday, keeping him under contract for the 2020-21 season.
With the Lakers from 2018-20, McGee started 130 of 143 regular-season games, averaging 9.4 points and 6.7 rebounds in 19.6 minutes.
The 35-year-old Gasol, a three-time All-Star selection, spent the past year and a half with. the Toronto Raptors after the Memphis Grizzlies traded him in February 2019 for three players and a second-round 2024 NBA Draft pick. As a 12th-year NBA player in 2019-20, Gasol started 43 of 44 regular-season games, averaging a career-low 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds over 26.4 minutes.
