PORTLAND, Ore. — It was mid-40s and sideways raining in Portland on Saturday. Not ideal conditions for MLS Cup 2021. Or, it turns out, part of the pregame celebration.
Before the Portland Timbers and New York City FC kicked off, MLS attempted to roll out a giant inflatable replica of the MLS Cup trophy. While the float stood as intended before being rolled out of the north end of Providence Park, the inclement conditions took it from there (h/t The Athletic's Alexander Abnos and the Associated Press' Anne Peterson):
And they’ve given up on the giant MLS Cup. 😂 pic.twitter.com/pczGu0Lll8

May both teams have a better game than the float.
