CJ McCollum targeting to return 'next week' from left foot injury originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

Good news Rip City!

CJ McCollum told The Athletic's Jason Quick he is targeting a return next week from his left mid-foot fracture suffered on January 16th vs. Atlanta.

“If I was a betting man, I would bet on next week, but I can’t bet on sports,” said McCollum.

The Blazers play Minnesota on the second of a back-to-back on Sunday before hosting four games against New Orleans and Dallas. The homestand will finish against the Brooklyn Nets before leaving on a four-game road trip beginning March 25th.

On March 5th, CJ McCollum had been cleared for contact practice per Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey.

Prior that week, McCollum told Jason Quick the foot is "slowly progressing" but no timetable has been made for his return to the court. Tuesday's evaluation of the foot came back "how they expected it to be."

“I’ll be back soon, as long as everything continues to go the way it’s been going," added McCollum on Sunday.

McCollum is taking the rehab process slowly because of his history of left foot injuries: breaking it during his senior year of college and again during rookie training camp.

“I’m coming off my third fracture. I have to be smart and patient,” said McCollum who added he needs to "see how [his] foot would respond to contact."

On February 16th, McCollum had his left foot re-evaluated after suffering a left mid-foot fracture on January 16 against the Atlanta Hawks. Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations, Neil Olshey, gave the latest update at that time, announcing that the Blazers starting shooting guard, “continues to progress in his return to action.”

"McCollum, who was examined today by team medical personnel, will no longer be required to wear a walking boot and will advance to the next stage of his rehabilitation. He will be reevaluated again in two weeks," said Olshey after McCollum's evaluation.

Head coach Terry Stotts seemed content with McCollum's rehab when asked about it following Portland's loss to Denver near the end of the First Half of the NBA season.

"He's still working on his rehab. He's not doing much. Whatever you've seen him do on social media is about all that he's doing," explained Stotts.

"The rehab is going well. We are pleased with the way the foot is healing but there's really not much more to that. He's not running. Stationary shooting [only]. He needs to let it run its course."

Before suffering the foot sprain, McCollum was off to his best start in his career, averaging 26.7 points on 47.3% FG including 44.1% from three to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists through 13 games.
