Police: Patriots S Duron Harmon denied entry into Costa Rica while carrying marijuana
Authorities detained and turned away New England Patriots safety Duron Harmon from entry into Costa Rica for marijuana possession on Friday, local police told the Costa Rica Star.
A routine luggage check uncovered 58 grams of marijuana hidden in an iced tea can, a THC edible, three pipes with cannabis oil and 4.3 grams of compressed marijuana, authorities said.
“This involved a professional NFL player, who tried to come into the country carrying marijuana,” director of Fiscal Control Police Irving Malespín told the Star. “We has sent back to U.S. territory. It is important to highlight the work of different police bodies, who carry out important operations in different areas of the country. We want to prevent undesirable people from entering the country.”
The Patriots acknowledged the incident in a statement released on Saturday.
“We are aware of the situation involving Duron Harmon Friday night in Costa Rica,” the statement reads. “He has since returned to the U.S. and we are seeking to gain more information. At this time, we have no further update.”
Harmon posted an apology on Instagram later in the day.
This is the first known off-field incident involving Harmon, a third-round draft pick in 2013 who was named a team captain last season. He has 114 tackles and 11 interceptions in 79 career games and picked off Nick Foles in February’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
