Plumber admits to funny craving after winning big prize in North Carolina lottery

Timothy Sanders is a plumber, so there’s a funny kind of logic in the first thing that crossed his mind after winning six figures in the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Some winners scream and shout, others jump around, and still others start calling their friends.

He wanted water.

“I had to put the ticket down and go to the kitchen to get some water before I went back and checked it again,” Sanders said in a news release. “My heart was racing.”

He won $100,000 on Sunday, March 20, with a Cash 5 ticket that cost $1.

Timothy Sanders works as a plumber and he says the first thing he thought of after winning the North Carolina Education Lottery was a glass of water.

Odds of getting a jackpot in Cash 5 “are 1 in 962,598,” the state reports.

Sanders, 47, bought his ticket in the Moore County town of Southern Pines, at the Southern Pines Mobile Mart, officials said.

Like a lot of lottery winners, Sanders says he was shocked, but was apparently clear of mind about what he intended to spend the money on: “I’ve been wanting a truck forever,” Sanders said in the release. “Probably a Chevrolet.”

Top-of-the-line pickups can be expensive, so it’s reasonable to wonder if Sanders would have enough money after state and federal tax withholdings were taken out.

Turns out, he went home with enough money to buy two pickups.

Sanders picked up his money at lottery headquarters Monday, March 21, and walked out with $71,010, the state lottery said.

A 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 starts at $31,500, according to Chevrolet.com.

That would leave Sanders with $39,500 to spare.
