Playing under the lights at Williams-Brice will look different starting this season

The lights will soon glow brighter at Williams-Brice Stadium.

South Carolina started installing new LED lighting at the Gamecocks’ football stadium this week, the school announced in a social media post Tuesday. The new lights are part of multiple renovations expected before the 2022 football season, according to a school announcement made in October.

“Speaking of atmosphere… get ready because it’s about to go to a whole new level,” USC posted to its official football Twitter account.

The new lights will have the capability to flash garnet, the school confirmed. Georgia and Alabama are among SEC schools that have added LED lighting in recent years. The garnet-light option will add a new visual experience for fans at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The updates include projects to expand the west main concourse and install new elevators. The west main concourse expansion is slated to cost $2.3 million and will add square footage for future updates such as new concessions, room for fans to walk and additional restrooms, according to USC.

Two new 200-level elevators are also being added. That project will cost $2.4 million. New ribbon board displays are being added around the stadium’s bowl area.

“We have a great home for football, but there are things that can be done to help modernize the stadium to create more excitement and a better fan experience,” athletic director Ray Tanner said in the October statement when the upgrades were announced.

South Carolina finished four new and renovated club level lounges in Williams-Brice Stadium in 2020, a $22.5 million premium seating project. Thosee new amenities lowered stadium capacity from 80,250 to 77,559.

The second USC football season under head coach Shane Beamer kicks off Sept. 3 at home against Georgia State.
