Players to watch in NSCIF: Playoffs begin the week of Feb. 12

Jan. 30—With the Northern Section playoff opt-out date set for a week from Thursday, with the seed meeting that following Saturday, Feb, 10, the postseason phase is beginning to take shape in the NSCIF.

Star players are needed to win championships and so here is a list of players to watch, sectioned off by division, heading into the second phase of the season.

Division II (Girls)

Points — Live Oak, which sits as the top-seed right now in D-II, has the points leader in the division. Johanna Petrone, a junior midfielder, has scored nearly 100 points and 39 goals for the Lions (15-1-1). — Senior McKayla Holmen is third in the division with 59 points and 16 goals. — No. 2 is a junior striker out of Orland, Paulina Martins (72 points, 34 goals)

Goals — Petrone 39 goals — Martins 34 goals — Jackie Hernandez, out of Corning, 26 goals

D-III (Girls)

Goals — Daisy Ruiz, out of Williams, is No. 11 with six goals in eight games recorded.

Ava Muir Vickrey, of Winters, leads D-III with 14 goals scored in 13 games recorded for the top-seeded team in the postseason chase. — Williams midfielder Isabella Santillan is No. 4 in goals with 10 for Williams, seeded fourth by the section.

Points — Santillan, a senior midfielder, is No. 5 with 22 points, a combination of goals and assists recorded. — Ruiz is No. 13 with 15 points — Itzel Cruz, a freshman out of Colusa, is No. 15 with 11 points for the RedHawks, seeded third right now in the initial listing of the playoff points scenario that is updated by the NSCIF throughout the regular season. — Janell Garcia, a freshman out of Colusa, is 17th with 10 points this season.

G/K Saves — Oryhia Velazquez, out of Williams, leads D-III with 36 saves in eight games recorded.


Northern Section boys soccer leaders, including Live Oak, Gridley, Orland and Colusa, will be revealed Thursday. Statistics are submitted by coaches through MaxPreps.
