Report: Player's father shoots coach over playing time dispute at Ohio youth basketball tournament

A disagreement over a child's playing time resulted in a man being shot in the parking lot during a youth basketball tournament on Saturday, according to Sarah McRitchie of Toledo's 13abc.

Mario J. Lacy Sr. from Euclid, Ohio, is reportedly in police custody after allegedly shooting a coach in the parking lot of Cedar Point Sports Complex in Sandusky, Ohio. According to the complex's website, the Midwest Hoops Circuit, a travel circuit for players in grades 3-11, was being played on Saturday.

Witnesses reportedly told 13abc that Lacy was upset about his child's playing time, leading to a confrontation in the parking lot around 1 p.m.

After the shooting, Lacy reportedly drove away from the scene, but was soon located by police, arrested and transported to Erie County Jail. He now faces attempted murder charges.

One witness described a chaotic scene to 13abc:

“We were getting trampled, falling down, everything ... not knowing what’s going on,” said James Cammon, a parent of one of the players. “Plus all the shootings you hear that’s going on ... people were like pure panic.”

Officials with the Erie County Sheriff’s office told 13abc the alleged victim has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
