The Pittsburgh Steelers open up their home schedule with a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Which Falcons starters will be playing, and which depth players will give the Steelers the toughest times? Understanding the opponent is a key factor in understanding how well a certain player is faring.

Offense

Matt Ryan and Julio Jones should likely only play one series. Devonta Freeman is already ruled out. The team will get a glimpse of Tevin Coleman, but the Steelers should be seeing a heavy dose of rookie Brian Hill throughout the game. Hill is more of a downhill, power runner, so it should be a good test for players such as Tyson Alualu and Leterrius Walton.

The Falcons do not have much depth at the wide receiver position, so this should be a good chance to see exactly what the team has in their depth cornerbacks such as Mike Hilton and Brian Allen.

Defense

First round pick Tak McKinley may be out for this game as well. Still, the Falcons have a plethora of depth and will be bringing in quality defensive lineman from the start of the game to the finish. It should be a great test for the depth of this offensive line. In the Steelers week one game, the unit struggled as a whole, especially tackles Brian Mihalik and Jerald Hawkins. It will be on both of them to learn from their performance and show better in this game against what should be good competition.

The Falcons have depth at cornerback, but they are a bit undersized in their depth. Taller deep threats such as Justin Hunter and Sammie Coates should have plus matchups later in the game, and both should have chances to prove their roster status in this game.
