The Detroit Pistons made their first preseason roster cuts and will not continue on with a Ball brother. The move was unsurprisingly ripped by the family patriarch later in the day.

The Pistons announced they had cut LiAngelo Ball on Monday, the morning after a preseason win against the New York Knicks. He did not play in either of the Pistons’ two preseason games and is reportedly dealing with a right ankle injury. The team also cut Anthony Lamb and Louis King.

Ball has had a tougher time in the NBA than his older brother. Lonzo Ball was the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA draft and is currently with the New Orleans Pelicans. Younger brother LaMelo Ball was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 3 overall pick last month.

LiAngelo Ball cut from first NBA camp

LiAngelo, the middle son of LaVar Ball, was taking part in his first NBA training camp and preseason. He signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Pistons on Dec. 2. It’s a minimum, guaranteed contract that has financial incentive if the player signs with that franchise’s G League team. The bonus is paid out after spending 60 days with the team and can vary in amount, from $5,000 to $50,000.

LaVar Ball rips ‘raggedy as hell’ Pistons

LaVar Ball happened to be on a Bleacher Report AMA on Monday and was asked if he had thoughts on the move. Obviously, he did and was not afraid to share them. Via Bleacher Report:

I definitely have thoughts on that. The people in Detroit are great. I love the fans, but the franchise over there is raggedy as hell. They don't know a good player. I was giving them a Lottery pick for free! Has the skills to play and the notoriety to bring everybody to the game. How do you throw that out the window? They're gonna learn the hard way. My boys are gonna end up together playing somewhere. Gelo can shoot the lights out. That was raggedy what they did. But hey, they're gonna learn the hard way.

LaVar didn’t stop there. He said he thinks the Hornets should sign LiAngelo and then bring on Lonzo. He said he would “guarantee that franchise will win a championship” with the three Ball brothers playing together as grown men.

Ball’s likely return to G League

Ball will likely play on the Pistons’ G League team, Grand Rapids Drive, though it’s uncertain if the league will play this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ball, 22, was on the Oklahoma City Blue G League team as a practice player last season. He worked his way to a contract, but never got to play in a game as the season was terminated in March at the start of the pandemic in the United States.

He has played professionally with the Prienai in the Lithuanian Basketball League in 2018, and also with the Los Angeles Ballers in the Junior Basketball Association, which was founded by LaVar Ball.
