Pirates close in on PVL title: Wheatland Union High School boys soccer a region-best No. 32 in SJS poll

Jan. 23—The Wheatland Union High boys soccer team is the lone area team in this week's Sac-Joaquin Section's top-50 poll, moving up three spots to No. 32 as the unbeaten Pioneer Valley League team. With four matches left, the Pirates (12-2-2, 8-0-2 PVL) are .200 percentage points up on Twelve Bridges for the top spot in the PVL.

Three teams in the PVL and Capital Valley Conference will be awarded automatic berths into the postseason, which begins Feb. 9 for the boys and Feb. 10 for the girls divisions.

Lindhurst (10-4) has the third and final berth, right now, out of the PVL. The Blazers (7-3) do have to play fourth place Colfax (8-5-2, 5-2-2) once more when the two battle it out Thursday in Placer County. After that, Lindhurst is at Sutter and Center to close out the season.

MaxPreps does not poll coaches, sportswriters or fans. Nor does its staff make any judgments on the merits of any individual team. Prior season history, school size and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings, MaxPreps said in a statement.

The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule, MaxPreps stated.

For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them than a team ranked ahead, according to MaxPreps.

Other factors that will affect the rankings are times when MaxPreps has incomplete or inaccurate information. MaxPreps will correct errors when they are reported. Missing scores and games can be reported on the team's MaxPreps page.

Playoff wins are weighted higher than regular season games, MaxPreps stated.

In the CVC, River Valley and Yuba City sit near the basement of the standings and appear to be out of the postseason chase. The two meet on the field for the final time Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at River Valley High School.

On the girls side, it is a similar situation with Yuba City and River Valley each still without a league win heading into the second and final rivalry matchup Thursday at Yuba City High School. Both schools are 0 — 6-1 in league.

The top area girls soccer team in Monday's SJS poll is Sutter (12-4, 7-3 PVL). The Huskies are 41st in the full poll and 3rd in D-IV. Sutter and Lindhurst are tied for third in league with three matches left. Four teams out of the PVL will get into the SJS playoffs.

After a trip to Twelve Bridges on Thursday, Sutter hosts Lindhurst at 3:15 p.m. Jan. 30 at Sutter Union High School in the first of its two remaining matches left in the regular season.

Inderkum (18-1-1) took over the top spot in Monday's SJS girls soccer poll. The Tigers are at River Valley Jan. 30 and host Yuba City on Feb. 6.
