According to a press release from the school, Northwestern head coach David Pierce and offensive coordinator Robert Hellams have been relieved of their duties, effective immediately.

Pierce took over the Trojans head job in April of 2016 after more than 30 years at the school. Under Pierce, the Trojans were 11-5, including a 2-3 mark this season.

The Trojans played a brutal non-conference slate that included road games at state powerhouses South Pointe and Spartanburg and a home loss to Byrnes. The Trojans are averaging 24.4 points a game, but were held to 14 points or less in all three losses.

Defensive coordinator James Martin will take the head job in the interim as the Trojans play Gaffney Friday, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago.

Martin has coaching experience, heading South Mecklenburg (NC) for several years before coming to Northwestern.

The Trojans begin region play on September 29.
