Phylicia Rashad will direct a world premiere play at Steppenwolf Theatre next season, the theater announced Wednesday.

The two-time Tony Award winner will direct “Purpose” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, slated to be cast with Steppenwolf ensemble members Alana Arenas, Glenn Davis and Jon Michael Hill. The play, about an Illinois family at the center of Black American politics, is scheduled for March 14 to April 21, 2024, on the mainstage.

Steppenwolf also announced that Jess McLeod, who served as resident director of “Hamilton” in Chicago, will direct the Chicago premiere of Larissa FastHorse’s “The Thanksgiving Play.” The comedy will include ensemble members Audrey Francis and Tim Hopper and is scheduled for April 25 to June 2, 2024, in the in-the-round Ensemble Theater.
