Top 10 most expensive college football tickets

Forbes has released their third-annual TiqIQ Top 25 College Football price ranking. The list ranks average ticket prices in college football. The list is dominated by SEC teams, but the number one spot goes to a non-SEC team. Who do you think made the top spot with the most expensive tickets in college football?

No. 10: Oklahoma Sooners. The average ticket price is $161. After finishing 2012 as co-champs of the Big 12, it comes as a bit of a surprise to see the Sooners drop seven spots in the TiqIQ Top 25 after opening up last year at #3. At $161 on average, Oklahoma Sooners tickets are down 22% from last year’s preseason average. Tickets against TCU, the most expensive game for the Sooners, come in just above last year’s season mark at $219.  With an average price of $92, the Sooners season opener against Louisiana-Monroe is their least expensive game of the year.

No. 9: Iowa Hawkeyes. The average ticket price is $166.Following last year’s disappointing 4-8 season, prices for Iowa Hawkeyes tickets are down 18% from last preseason when they opened the year with a #6 ranking.  On the high end, the most expensive contest at Kinnick Stadium is against Michigan, where the average ticket price is $256. The cheapest game of the season is against Northern Illinois, with an average price of $115.

No. 8: Alabama Crimson Tide. The average ticket price is $179. Nick Saban and his Crimson Tide are once again at the top of the college football world, entering 2013 with a #1 preseason AP ranking. When it comes to tickets, at $179 per seat Alabama Crimson Tide tickets for the 2013 season rank 8th in the nation, down three spots from their preseason TiqIQ ranking in 2012.  Alabama actually has the forth most expensive average price in the SEC, behind. Perhaps Tide faithful are saving their money for Pasadena. Their most expensive game of the season is against LSU on November 9th with an average price of $460. This is the most expensive Alabama home game since Alabama-LSU I in 2011--that game, which was billed as a play-in for the national championship had an average price of $709.  Of course, as we all know, it was just the preview of the National Championship, but with a different ending.

No. 7: LSU Tigers. The average ticket price is $181. With LSU tickets averaging $181, the Tigers start the 2013 campaign up three spots from their 2012 preseason ranking. This also makes the third straight year the Tigers open up the season in the top 10 of our rankings. Their highest priced game of 2013 is their matchup with Johnny Manziel and the Aggies on September 21st, with prices averaging $488 per seat.  This game is $48 less expensive than last year’s home game against Alabama. If you’re looking for value, Kent State on the 14th is their least expensive game with tickets averaging just $54.

No. 6: Georgia Bulldogs. The average ticket price is $188. After narrowly losing to the eventual national champions Alabama in the SEC title game, the Bulldogs are poised to make another run towards the SEC title and perhaps a National Championship. Bulldogs fans are showing their excitement and prices for Georgia Bulldogs tickets average $188, which puts them at #6 on our list. UGA is up 14 spots from last year’s #20 preseason ranking, and they have the second-largest price increase of any team, behind only Notre Dame. Their match-up against LSU on September 28th is their most expensive game with an average of $366. With an average price just over $100, the least expensive game at Sanford Stadium is the September 21st game against North Texas.

No. 4: Nebraska Cornhuskers. The average ticket price is $210. After a disappointing blowout in the BigTEN championship game last season, the Huskers dropped 3 spots in our top 25 from their #1 preseason rank in each of the last two years.  Despite being down 20% from last year, Nebraska Cornhuskers tickets are still only of five teams with an average price above $200, at $210.  On September 14th, the Cornhuskers face UCLA for the 12th time in history in their most expensive game of the year. At an average price of $310, prices for this game are almost double their cheapest game of the year against Southern Miss, which have an average price of $165.

No. 3: Michigan Wolverines. The average ticket price is $230. The Wolverines are poised to bounce back from a heartbreaking bowl game loss last season to South Carolina. Even though Michigan had a down year last season at 8-5, ticket prices are up 24%, and for the third straight season they are in our top 10. Currently, Michigan Wolverine tickets are averaging $230, good for #3, up 5 spots from last year’s preseason ranking. The Notre Dame night game is the most expensive ticket on the schedule, averaging $511. The Wolverines are even driving up prices on the road, and the most extreme case of that is their first visit to UConn’s 40,000-seat Rentschler Field. UConn Football tickets average $54 for the season.  The average price for Michigan’s visit is $241, with a get-in price of $118.

No. 2: Ohio State Buckeyes. The average ticket price is $246. Ohio State tickets are averaging $246 according to Razorgator, putting the Buckeyes in the same #2 slot they owned at the start of last season. Their most expensive game of the year is the September 28th match-up with Wisconsin, which currently has an average ticket price of $413 per seat. On the low end, the cheapest game of the year for the Buckeyes is their season opener at Ohio Stadium against Buffalo, with an average of $152.

No. 1: Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The average ticket price is $294. With Notre Dame tickets averaging $294, the Irish start the 2013 season in the top 5 most expensive tickets for the third straight year.  Despite last year’s BCS blowout, fans are paying top dollar to seeif the Irish can take that one final step, and capture their 12th national title. As always, the rivalry game against USC is the most expensive game with an average of $554. The cheapest game this year in South Bend is against BYU, with an average price of $190.
