The Magnificent Seven -- Where Are They Now?

Sixteen years ago, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team put up a courageous and passionate performance to capture the team gold for the first time ever. Since then the “Magnificent Seven” -- (from left) Kerri Strug, Jaycie Phelps, Dominique Moceanu, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Amy Chow and Amanda Borden -- have grown up. Miller was the team’s highest scorer, individually placing second overall after the team competition. Miller learned early last year that she had ovarian cancer. After several rounds of chemotherapy, doctors gave her a clean bill of health in May 2011. Prior to that, she graduated with a law degree from Boston College in 2007 and then started the Shannon Miller Lifestyle website to discuss women’s health education. Strug gave one of the bravest performances in the Olympics ever. The U.S. had the lead going into their final event, the vault, but the Russians could still mount a comeback if the Americans collapsed. When the vaulter before Strug fell on both attempts, that put pressure on Strug, the final vaulter, to perform well. On her first attempt, she fell and badly damaged her ankle. Nonetheless, she vaulted again, and this time landed cleanly and scored high enough to guarantee the gold. Then she fell to her knees. Moceanu, the pint-sized youngest member of the Magnificent Seven, delighted the Atlanta audience with her sprightly floor routine set to “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” In the individual floor exercise event, she finished fourth, one place out of a medal.

Moceanu recently made headlines with the publication of her memoir, “Off Balance.” In it, she writes of harsh treatment while training with Bela Karolyi and his wife Martha, who is now the women’s national team coordinator for USA Gymnastics. Moceanu has her own business dedicated to public speaking and gymnastics-related events, and lives in Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband Mike Canales, a foot and ankle surgeon, and their two children. Dawes was the only team member to have all eight of her scores count toward the total. She took home the bronze in the individual floor exercise competition, making her the first African-American to win an individual event medal in women’s gymnastics at the Olympics. (AP Photo/Ed Reinke)

Dawes has been active in the U.S. fitness and sports landscape. She served as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation from 2004-06, helped cover the 2008 and 2010 Games for Yahoo! Sports, and is currently serving as co-chair of President Obama’s President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Borden was the last person to qualify for the team and had some of the least experience. Yet when it came time to select a captain, she was shocked to learn that all six of her teammates had chosen her. Borden is the owner and a coach at Gold Medal Gym in Tempe, Ariz., which she opened in 2004. She later opened another branch in nearby Chandler. Borden has served as a commentator for both gymnastics and cheerleading events on CBS Sports, Fox Sports, Turner Broadcasting and ESPN. She has two children with husband Brad Cochran. Chow only competed in two events during the team competition, but her difficult routine in the uneven bars secured a high score. In the individual competition for the uneven bars, she won a silver medal. Chow, along with Dominique Dawes, was one of only two members of the Magnificent Seven to also qualify for the U.S. team at the 2000 Games. At the time, that team finished in fourth place. Chow graduated from Stanford University’s medical school in 2007 and is now a pediatrician. In July 2010, she married Jason Ho, an orthopedic surgeon. She is a competitive diver, and missed competing for a berth to the 2011 U.S. national diving championships due to an injury. In 2010, the IOC ruled that one member of China’s bronze-medal winning 2000 team was underage, causing the IOC to strip the Chinese of their bronze and award it to the then-fourth place U.S. team. After coaching gymnastics for a few years, Phelps returned to her home state, Indiana, and in 2010 opened the Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center in Greenfield. The center, which she opened with her father and boyfriend, offers instruction in several sports, including gymnastics, tumbling, soccer, softball and baseball.
