Montreal's mayor held over corruption probe

The mayor of Montreal, Michael Applebaum, has been arrested on fraud charges linked to real estate deals worth tens of thousands of euros. It is the latest in a series of scandals involving Canadian local politics and comes months after his predecessor Gerald Tremblay quit over corruption accusations. َApplebaum is Montreal’s first Anglophone mayor in a century and pledged to stamp out fraud when he took office last November. He faces charges relating to acts he is said to have committed as leader of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough between 2006-11.
