Natural world phenomena

From a vivid lightning bolt illuminating the Grand Canyon to a rock formation that looks just like an elephant - these are the extraordinary

phenomenons of the natural world. These outlandish landscapes might look

like something from another planet but they are in fact completely

natural eccentricities.

Lightning striking Grand Canyon

**MANDATORY BYLINE** PIC BY TRAVIS ROE / U.S. DEPT OF THE INTERIOR / CATERS NEWS - (PICTURED: LIGHTNING STRIKING GRAND CANYON) - This is the incredible moment a fierce lightning bolt crashed against the Grand Canyon illuminating the steep canyon walls. Shrouded in darkness, the breath-taking landscape was shocked into life as mother nature sent the bolt storming down to Earth. As it cracked against the rocks the bright blue bolt illuminated the South Rim of the canyon, considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. With just the Desert View Watchtower in the foreground, the lightning was perfectly framed by the canyon which is located in Arizona, USA. The once-in-a-lifetime shot, captured by photographer Travis Roe, was taken last year but has only just surfaced after he submitted the image to the U.S. Department of the Interior. The DOI, the government agency tasked with protecting US land, water and wildlife, runs an annual photo contest called Share the Experience. SEE CATERS COPY

Over time, coastal winds removed the surrounding sand leaving the pillars exposed.) - From the vivid colours of a beautiful hot spring to a random rock formation that looks just like an elephant - these are the extraordinary phenomenons of the natural world. The outlandish landscapes might look like something from another planet but they are in fact completely natural eccentricities. And while these mind-blowing quirks of Mother Nature might continue to puzzle scientists, they also continue to draw in tourists fascinated by the surreal spectacles. SEE CATERS COPY.
