Security tight ahead of G8 summit in Northern Ireland

An 8,000 strong police force is tightening security ahead of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next week. It is being called the largest police operation of its kind to ever take place in the country. Around half of the officers have been drafted in from elsewhere in the UK. Activists are also getting ready. More than 1,000 trade unionists, environmentalists and anti-poverty campaigners have marched peacefully through the streets of Belfast. The number of police present outnumbered the protesters. Many of those marching say they are angry at what they see as an elite club of the world’s richest nations, acting for the interests of big business rather than ordinary people. The next major protest is planned for the start of the G8. The two-day G8 Leaders Summit begins on Monday and is being held in a luxury resort in Loch Erne, close to Enniskillen.
