Photo newsletter: Art in Rhode Island and a special prom

Hello everyone !

Rhode Island is a place of artwork. Not only does the city have the Rhode Island School of Design, but there are many artists all over the state that create everything from sculptures and photographs to the huge murals you see, particularly in downtown Providence. Reporter Amy Russo and photographer Kris Craig interviewed one of them this week for a story. Angela Gonzalez met our team on Academy Avenue in Providence to show us the massive picture she has been working on at the Lillian Feinstein Senior Center building.

And speaking of interesting views of the city, Kris was on a shoot for our Wednesday Food pages at a local rooftop dining venue when he made this photo. With the skyline in the background, a water glass on one of the tables at the Aloft Blu Violet restaurant provided a medium for a topsy-turvy view of Providence.

And speaking of restaurants, long-time restaurant owner Bob Burke was the subject of a story Friday , by reporter Jim Hummel. The story tells of how local owners of small businesses have been negatively affected by Covid. According to the story, “small businesses trying to secure the latest round of federal grants to offset losses from the pandemic are finding increased restrictions and, in many cases, delays in receiving their checks”.

Robert Burke, in his Providence restaurant, Pot Au Feu, said “I would have much rather gotten a root canal at the DMV than what we went through with the application process” for a federal pandemic-aid grant through the RI Commerce Corporation.

And lastly, Journal photographer David DelPoio was at a very special prom in Providence recently. Young people with many types of challenges in their lives were at a downtown hotel ballroom, looking just wonderful as they enjoyed a night out. There is a page of pictures of it in today’s Sunday Journal.
