Phoenix1 announced Tuesday morning that it has signed James “Duck” Ma, their first Super Smash Bros. Melee player.

“On behalf of everyone at Phoenix1 we want to welcome Duck into the P1 family and wish him the best at the upcoming [CEO Dreamland] event,” team owner Rob Moore told Yahoo Esports. “This continues our strategy of expanding the Phoenix1 brand across multiple games with a focus on young upcoming talent.”

Duck is ranked #15 on the 2016 SSBMRank list and is considered the top Melee player in Michigan. His notable placings include a victory at Show Me Your Moves 17 and second place finishes at Dairly Beloved, Endgame, and Full Bloom 3. He most recently competed at Smash Rivalries, where he finished in 13th place.

The Samus player had signed with Denial Esports back in August. Duck and the team mutually agreed to part ways in January over late payments. Duck has since posted that there are no outstanding payments due and that his experience with Denial was overall positive.

This is Phoenix1’s second jump into the Smash Bros. realm. The team had previously announced their presence in the Smash 4 world by signing Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey in February. Tweek was the team’s first foray into esports outside of League of Legends.
