Surgery for young Phillies reliever, Gregorius on injured list, Bradley activated originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Lots of Phillies health updates before Tuesday night's game, some good, some bad:

  • Reliever JoJo Romero is done for the season. He will have ligament reconstruction (Tommy John) surgery on his left elbow next week in Los Angeles. Recovery time is generally 12 to 16 months. Romero, 24, was placed on the 60-day injured list.

  • Shortstop Didi Gregorius was placed on the 10-day IL, backdated to Thursday. He has been plagued by swelling on the outer aspect of his right elbow. He fell on the elbow making a catch in shallow center field last month. Manager Joe Girardi was unsure how long Gregorius would be out. “The problem is we’ve just been having a hard time getting all of the swelling out of his right elbow,” Girardi said. “We’re hoping that it will continue to improve as we go along. Right now, we’ll just continue to treat it.”

  • Catcher J.T. Realmuto was out of the starting lineup for a second straight game with a contusion at the base of his left hand near the wrist. Realmuto was not placed on the IL. “He’s still day to day,” Girardi said. “He came in and did some work today. He still feels it a little bit and we thought it was best to not send him out there if he’s feeling that little bit of a bone bruise just because he’s not going to get better.”

  • Scott Kingery was placed on the seven-day concussion IL.

  • Bryce Harper’s sore right shoulder has made a swift improvement. He was in the starting lineup Tuesday night.

  • The Phillies added reliever Archie Bradley from the IL. He missed just over a month with an oblique strain.

  • Utility man Ronald Torreyes was also activated.

  • The Phillies are going with a 14-man pitching staff, which means they have a four-man bench. It’s even shorter than that with Realmuto active but not healthy.
