The Phillies will look to improve their bullpen this winter. Maybe Ryan Sherriff can help. The team claimed the left-handed reliever off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

Sherriff has pitched in parts of four big-league seasons for the Rays and St. Louis Cardinals. He first appeared with the Cardinals in 2017 and had Tommy John surgery in 2018.

He made it back to the majors with the Rays in 2020 and appeared in two games during the World Series that year. He shuttled back and forth between the majors and Triple A in 2021 and missed a month early in the season after asking the Rays for some time away from the game. Upon returning, Sherriff told Tampa-area media that he had been in a “dark place” mentally and needed time to himself.

Sherriff pitched in 16 games in the majors for the Rays in 2021 and recorded a 5.52 ERA. He had a 2.81 ERA in 32 games at Triple A Durham.
