Philadelphia congresswoman carjacked at gunpoint, physically unharmed

A Philadelphia congresswoman was carjacked in the city Wednesday afternoon.

Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district, was walking to her vehicle while it was parked in the city’s FDR Park, local ABC affiliate WPVI reported. Two men in a dark SUV approached Scanlon, waved guns and demanded her keys, police said.

Scanlon, a Democrat, gave up the keys and was physically unharmed, her office said in a Twitter statement. Her cellphones, purse and ID were all in the vehicle, according to WPVI.

Scanlon’s district includes the part of South Philadelphia where she was relieved of her automobile, a blue 2017 Acura MDX. FDR Park sits across the street from the city’s football, basketball and baseball stadiums.

The congresswoman “thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety,” her office said on Twitter.

Cops have not spoken publicly about the robbery. Scanlon was elected in 2018.
