Tiger Woods kicking off 2020 at Torrey Pines while searching for win No. 83
Tiger Woods is ready to kick off his 2020 campaign, and will do so at a familiar course with the PGA Tour’s win record in his sights.
Woods, after leading the U.S. team to a win at the Presidents Cup last month, will tee it up at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego — a course where he’s won eight times.
Woods needs just one more win on the Tour to pass Sam Snead for the all-time record, and feels like he’s in a good place with his game to do so.
“I feel like I ended the year on a good note, and I felt like my game really didn't need a whole lot of dusting off,” Woods said, via ESPN. “I didn’t touch a club until my birthday. That was the only day I touched a club since the Presidents Cup. Just wanted to get away from it. I was a little bit fried physically, mentally, emotionally and just wanted to have it all end.”
Woods has played in one official event so far this season on Tour, when he picked up his 82nd career win at the ZOZO Championship in Japan. He had three top-10 finishes last season on Tour, too, winning at the Masters Tournament and finishing inside the top 10 at the Memorial Tournament and the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, enough to bring him to No. 6 in the official World Golf Rankings.
Following the tournament this week at Torrey Pines, Woods is set to play next month at the Genesis Invitational, where he’ll play host, and then the next week at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
And even though he knows he’s on the back end of his career, which can make for some tough days physically out on the course, Woods feels he still has a few wins left in him.
"When I was younger, I had more good days than bad, feeling-wise,'' Woods said, via ESPN. "Now, at 44, I feel more bad days than I do good days. I think all of you at my age or older can relate to that. I think that's the hardest part about being an older athlete. You see it all the time at the Masters. You see it every single year, either Fred [Couples] or [Bernhard] Langer or somebody's up there for about two to three days, then they fade. It's hard to put it together for all four days as you get older. It's just harder.
"That's one of the things I've noticed, it's hard to recover now. But I've been able to win a few tournaments since I've made my comeback and hopefully win some more.”
