PGA DFS: Yahoo Cup Picks for the Fortinet Championship

Looking for a way to learn PGA DFS without jumping in with both feet? We have a perfect solution for you. This year Yahoo and Yahoo Fantasy are offering a $10,000 freeroll called the PGA “Yahoo Cup.” This contest awards a winner for weekly events and one winner at the end of the season who has the most cumulative points. Just two weeks left in the season and the winner will receive $1,000 at the end of them. Ultimately, winning the Yahoo Cup comes down to picking the right golfers. Today I will provide my top three value PGA DFS picks based on Yahoo salary, a couple of lineup fill-ins, and two different fantasy golf lineup variations for making PGA picks for the second-to-last round of the year. The Yahoo Cup for 2021 will end just after the Ryder Cup and start again in the new year. Let’s find the winning lineup this week.

Transparency Corner

A few things went right, and a few things went wrong at the Tour Championship. Highlighting Patrick Cantlay, the eventual winner at only 24% owned, was a good start, as was Justin Thomas, who was below 20% owned and ended up as one of the top scorers. Not getting to Kevin Na held back the finishing position of the lineup quite a bit.

Top Three PGA DFS Value Picks for the Fortinet Championship

With the salary cap per player capped at $50, Jon Rahm presents incredible value. That goes without saying, so below are the top three value picks to pair with Rahm this week.

Mito Pereira ($32)

After bursting onto the scene by winning three times on the Korn Ferry Tour, Pereira made a splash right away on the PGA Tour, coming in the top six three straight weeks, starting with the Barbasol and ending with the Olympics. His travel seemed to catch up to him, as he came in 39th at the Barracuda before missing the cut at the Wyndham. That was almost a month ago, so there has been plenty of time for him to recharge his batteries and gear up for his first season on the PGA Tour.

Chez Reavie ($27)

This week Reavie has one of the best course histories at Silverado Golf Club, as he came in third in last year’s showing of the event. Reavie entered last year in the top 60 in the world, but he had a really tough year after the big finish here. He did not come in the top 10 the rest of the year and went on to miss nine cuts in 11 starts from January to May. But things took a turn for the better at the Palmetto Championship, and he made eight of his last 10 cuts. That was enough to get him into the playoffs, where he ended his season by coming in 31st at the Northern Trust. That should give him momentum coming into this week, providing great value at this salary.

Doug Ghim ($24)

The pricing algorithm at Yahoo likes to tease with Doug Ghim quite a bit, pricing him down among the value plays this week. But the research shows that this course is the best fit for Ghim among any on the PGA rotation, and he had a 14th-place finish here last year.

PGA DFS Yahoo Cup Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Stephan Jaeger ($33)

  • Maverick McNealy ($36)

  • Hudson Swafford ($25)

PGA DFS Yahoo Cup Lineup Builds

Aggressive Lineup Build

If the objective is to get two premier studs in the lineup, using the combo of Ghim, Reavie and Swafford should allow for that, leaving about mid-$20s salary remaining for the last golfer.

Conservative Lineup Build

With the field so top heavy, dominated by Rahm, this strategy should yield four golfers priced over $30s, including Rahm, using a balanced build approach with the best player in the world. The look of this lineup seems like the more optimal way to go this week. For more information and full-field projections, check out Awesemo’s Yahoo PGA Projections here.
