PFF: Bills should have addressed offensive tackle in free agency

The Buffalo Bills addressed their offensive line during free agency, but not fully in the way Pro Football Focus would have liked.

The football analytics outlet named their least favorite decision made by every NFL team during the first few weeks of the market being open. Buffalo not adding a particular offensive lineman caused some concern.

PFF acknowledged the Bills’ attempts at building up the middle of their offensive line. There, Buffalo added Connor McGovern via a three-year deal and inked David Edwards to a one-year contract. Those two will feature in a summer positional battle against the likes of Ryan Bates and Ike Boettger, who also re-signed.

However, those players don’t line up at tackle. On the outside of the O-line, PFF believes Spencer Brown needs some competition. So far, Buffalo has only re-signed David Quessenberry at swing tackle and that’s it this spring.

Earlier this offseason, general manager Brandon Beane supported Brown as the starting right tackle. He cited that back injuries slowed down his Year 2 progress.

The 2023 NFL draft is still en route and there’s a chance some competition comes there. For now, a lack of addition at tackle is PFF’s least favorite decision by Buffalo during free agency.

Here’s how PFF came to that conclusion:

The Bills retained Jordan Poyer for less than many expected, and while we don’t have the details yet, also added a good box safety in Taylor Rapp. They also bolstered the interior of their offensive line with the additions of guards Connor McGovern and David Edwards, but bringing in a swing tackle would’ve been a worthwhile addition, as well.
