The Seahawks have cancelled practice on Saturday after the players held a lengthy meeting. Instead, the day will be spent focusing on the social justice issues that face our country.
That will include every player registering to vote, Pete Carroll shared with reporters.
Tre Flowers, Jarran Reed and Chris Carson were originally scheduled to meet with the media before the team pivoted and had Carroll speak. The Seahawks head coach delivered an impassioned 15-minute speech about race relations in America.
He challenged white people to educate themselves on the history of racism in this country and to be accountable in the fight for equality.
"You have to care so much and show the love for people who deserve every bit of the rights to be treated equally and treated fairly and treated straight up," Carroll said. "They are not able to be fearless like you are. They just want to be like you. They just want to have the freedom and the comfort and the security of living a good life and loving through all of their family's exchanges and opportunities."
This is surely just the beginning for the Seahawks role in this revolution. The team will continue to play an active role in the fight for equality and empower its players to be leaders in the movement.
"We need to listen to (the players)," Carroll said. "They've got wisdom, and they've got power. They're just sensing what they're able to do and capable of doing. We need to hear them. When we do that, we'll follow the right lead and good things will happen."
Jamal Adams took to Twitter to share his appreciation for Carroll's lengthy message as well as the organization's support as a whole.
Big thank you to Coach Pete, John Schneider & the entire Seahawks organization for really hearing us as Black athletes. This is a special place, like I've said before where everyone's willing to learn and understand that wrong is wrong, and right is right.— Jamal Adams (@Prez) August 29, 2020
It's worth your time to watch Carroll's full speech below. The Seahawks will return to practice on Sunday for their final mock game. Media availability will take place after the scrimmage.
