It’s been a quiet January window for obvious reasons but our main priority was, of course, to bring in a goalkeeper that commands the area, distributes comfortably, and stops and blocks balls.
However, bringing in Matz Sels does very little to increase confidence. Our manager, a former goalkeeper, should know a thing or two about goalkeeping - this appears to be a fun fact that has been tossed around these last few weeks, at the same time that our goalkeeping situation has been less than promising.
Perhaps, then, this signing might go on to surprise us, but at the moment it feels very much like a panic buy at a point where we can’t afford to be dropping points.
The loss of Orel Mangala, too, feels like a huge blow - he was never short of technical masterpieces, and his work rate was exceptional.
Gio Reyna feels like a strong loan signing for the season - he will, hopefully, help to bolster our attacking midfield.
While Anthony Elanga has been great in that area, Callum Hudson Odoi’s performances have been questionable at times so it would be good to see Reyna stepping in.
Perhaps this is the silver lining.
