Penn State Top 25 players for 2022: Nick Singleton

·3 min read

The running game has always been critical to the Penn State program in it’s history when it comes to finding success. In recent years they have shied away from that approach but with the recruiting of Nick Singleton that page may be coming back to being a focal point.

The 5-star recruit from Reading, PA hopes that he can rejuvenate the offense of the team he grew up rooting for. Singleton has the size and speed combination to be a real threat in not just the college game but eventually the NFL.

For now, Singleton will be sharing the load with Keyvone Lee as they work to bring some balance to the Penn State offense. Get an idea of what the 2022 season may look like for Nick Singleton though, it could be a special one.

Biggest question for 2022

Easily the biggest question facing really Nick Singleton and this coaching staff is simple, how much are they going to use him this year and beyond. For several years now they have used running back committee’s and when it comes to Singleton that just won’t work. We saw it last year with Ohio State and TreyVeon Henderson, they used him from day one and he became a difference maker in that offense. Without him, the Buckeyes offense would have sputtered all year the same way Penn State’s will if they don’t utilize him.

It can’t be overstated enough, Singleton can be the grease that turns the wheel of this offense.

2022 will be a success if...

[autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] and this offense can find success if they at least work Singleton into the mix of carries at running back. While it would be ideal that he becomes the workhorse, he is still going to be a freshman. Despite that fact, his build and maturity have him ready for the work.

The combo of Singleton and Lee could be one of the best in the Big Ten. Lee is already getting hyped up for the season as a Doak Walker watchlist player, Singleton next year could have himself in the same position with the right type of season. Together, if this team wants it, we could easily see two 1,000 yard rushers if the quarterback situation becomes stale.

All in all, that won’t likely happen but it could if this team wants it to.

2022 will be a disappointment if...

While I don’t think 2022 can be a real disappointment for Nick Singleton it can be a less than ideal year. Obviously avoiding injury is vital but how much he is used will determine if it is a disappointment.

He has a chance to make a significant impact on this offense as a whole this year. They have neglected the running game since the departures of Saquon Barkley and Journey Brown. They need to reestablish it from a game control standpoint but also from a complete offense point of view. They are not going to win the Big Ten by passing 30 times a game with Sean Clifford, running the ball 30 times between Lee and Singleton? That is a better combination.

Realistic outlook for 2022

Realistically, Penn State isn’t likely to put a ton of pressure on it’s star freshman running back. What is more than likely to happen is we see Singleton get 5-10 carries a game with some passing work mixed into the thick of things.

It may be frustrating to everyone involved but the way this roster is built right now is that it is geared towards the future. Next year’s recruiting class is defensive heavy after addressing the offense in 2021. All in all, Singleton is setup to be the future, not present, star of this offense. Enjoy what you get of him this year when we see the flashes of greatness.
