Pella boys second, girls third at track and field indoor state meet

Mar. 11—AMES — The Pella track and field teams were both in action again last week at the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Meet on Thursday and Friday.

The boys were in action first on Thursday as the Dutch would bring home second place among the 29 Class 3A schools with 47 points. ADM took home the title with 79 points.

The Pella boys would bring home two title on the day with Hanson King winning the shot put with a throw of 55-1 to barely miss adding a Drake Relays Blue Standard.

Over on the track, sophomore Canaan Dunham raced to a win in the 3200 with a time of 9:23.19 while teammate Nathan Vander Waal followed in eighth place at 10:03.68.

Vander Waal also took second place in the 1600 while hitting a Blue Standard time of 4:19.78. Dunham was right behind him in third place and just missed the Blue Standard time of 4:20 by crossing the line at 4:20.10.

Other top five finishes included the 4x800 relay of Wyatt Van Dyke, Stephen Gaul, Mason Gaulke and Devon Browne taking fourth at 8:52.76 and the shuttle hurdle relay of Andrew Vanderhoff, Levi Stetterly, Rex Rhamy and Cor Huyser finishing fifth at 35.33.

The girls followed on Friday and the short-handed Lady Dutch were missing a few key pieces but were still able to take third in Class 3A with 36 points. ADM completed the sweep on the girls side with 84.5 points.

The Lady Dutch had a couple of runner-ups on the day with Jacie Trine taking second in the 400 at 58.61 while Ruth Dunham was second in the 3000 at 11:05.83. Kamryn Long's third place in the 60 meters at 8.16 was the other top five finish from the Pella girls.

Pella will compete in one more indoor meet at Central College this week on Friday and Saturday.
