Patriots sweep Hulman Center doubleheader

Jan. 12—Defense was the key for Terre Haute North's boys getting off to an early lead, and defense was the key for Terre Haute South coming back to make it interesting.

But the Patriots won 56-45 in Conference Indiana high school basketball Friday night, completing a Patriot sweep in Hulman Center. The North girls won 47-29 in the opening game of the night.

There were four lead changes in the first quarter of the boys game, a basket by Braden Walters giving North an 8-7 lead after a slow first quarter.

But the Patriots held the Braves to 1-for-11 shooting in the second period, opening that quarter with an 11-2 run for a 19-9 lead. It was 21-13 at halftime and all of South's points had come from two players — guards Treva Branch, with seven, and Zay Baker, with the other six.

And the start of the third quarter was a few minutes of North's best basketball of the season. The Patriots got the first seven points of that quarter — a 3-pointer, a dunk and an assist by Bryce Renn — and had an 18-point lead at 35-17 after a 3-pointer by Kavish Reddy.

Josh Morgan's 3-pointer with 4:10 left in the third quarter broke South's frontcourt scoring drought, and the Braves were off on a 14-2 run. Two steals by Zay Baker and one by Peyton Turner helped the momentum build, and Baker and Branch combined for 13 more points before the quarter ended. Branch's steal and layup in traffic made it a 37-31 game going into the fourth quarter.

"That was definitely our defense," said South coach Maynard Lewis in explaining the Braves' rally. "We didn't shoot very well."

After South missed at least one chance to draw even closer, it was North senior Jack Halls' time to shine. He had two dunks and a tipin among the Patriots' first eight points in the 15-2 burst that put the game out of reach.

"I thought we were good defensively — again," said North coach Todd Woelfle, whose team held the Braves to a combined 80 points in two games the past two weeks. "We forced [the Braves] to hit tough shots and we did an excellent job on the boards, holding them to one shot most of the time."

"[The Patriots'] length [Renn is 6-foot-9, Halls 6-7 and Walters 6-5] bothered us a little bit," said Lewis, whose team shot just 30% from the field. "We've got to find a way to score [if we play North in the sectional]. They were the better team tonight."

Walters had 22 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists for North. "Braden Walters got us going in the first half [his nine points and three assists accounting for more than half the North points]," coach Woelfle said.

Reddy added 12 points before being slowed by foul trouble, Renn scored 11 in the last two quarters and Halls scored eight. "Jack Halls was excellent off the bench, maybe his best game this year," the coach said, "and Bryce Renn had a really good second half."

South's guards had nearly 90% of their team's points, Zay Baker scoring 22 and Branch 16. Morgan led South's rebounders with seven.

"The effort and the energy was there," Lewis said. "Even though we lost this was something to build on, because we played a good team."

"A great team win," coach Woelfle said. "This keeps us in the [Conference Indiana] hunt."

South's girls had two good stretches in the first game, jumping out to a 6-2 lead on a basket by Haley Morris, a 3-pointer by Carley Werremeyer and an assist and a steal and free throw by Te'Rah Cooley, then scoring 10 straight points in the third quarter that included six more by Morris and baskets by Karizma English-Malone and Werremeyer.

That second rally only cut the deficit to 34-23, however, meaning between those bursts North outscored the Braves 32-7. South went without a field goal in the second quarter and didn't score at all in the first six minutes of that period.

Charlie Walker had 15 points and 11 rebounds for North before fouling out and Becca Gore also scored 15 with a game-high six assists. Morris had 12 points for the Braves, Cooley added eight rebounds and four steals and English-Malone had seven points and five rebounds.
