Blackhawks release 2021 training camp roster originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Three-time Stanley Cup champs Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith headline the roster for the Blackhawks' 2021 training camp released by the team on Monday ahead of Day 1's session.

Camp began on Monday at the Hawks' practice facility, Fifth Third Arena, and will lead up to the Blackhawks' first regular season game in Tampa Bay against the Lightning on Jan. 13.

The roster includes a total of 36 skaters per National Hockey League guidelines: 22 forwards and 14 defensemen, plus five goaltenders. Teams are required to carry three goalies during the season this year.

Core member Brent Seabrook was "unfit to participate" for Day 1 according to the Hawks. Seabrook participated in the team's summer camp ahead of the playoffs, but determined he wasn't ready for game action at the time following his right shoulder and hip surgeries in the winter. Forwards Evan Barratt and Pius Suter were also "unfit to participate."

Captain Jonathan Toews is expected to miss camp and the start of the season with an illness.

Center Kirby Dach will be out for camp and possibly the season after having surgery to repair a right wrist fracture that he suffered during an exhibition game for the World Junior Championship.

Forward Carl Soderberg is having immigration issues and will join the team at a later date.

Andrew Shaw will be back in action after not playing since Nov. 30, 2019 against the Colorado Avalanche due to a concussion.

Forward Zack Smith, who had back surgery on March 6 ahead of the NHL pause, was not on the roster for camp as the Hawks placed him on waivers.

Winger Alex Nylander is expected to miss four to six months after having knee surgery

Signed

Blackhawks forward Dylan Strome was on the roster after signing a two-year contract extension with the Hawks on Sunday ($3 million cap hit). Strome became a restricted free agent following the 2019-20 season.

Whose net is it anyway?

It was determined in the offseason that goalies Collin Delia, Malcolm Subban and Kevin Lankinen would battle for the starter job in training camp after the Hawks moved on from two-time Stanley Cup winner Corey Crawford. All three goalies were on Day 1's roster.
