Panthers win redemption rematch against Rams

Jan. 25—With more than a dozen lead changes, the Panthers and Rams battled it out for four quarters before the Panthers came out on top in a 61-57 conference victory.

When the teams faced earlier this season, it was Glenwood with a 67-46 win.

The Panthers (4-8, 4-5) are sitting at sixth in the Hawkeye 10 with Kuemper Catholic and Lewis Central leading, undefeated in conference play.

Glenwood (9-6, 7-4) was up by one at the end of the first and three at the half, but the Panthers put forth a strong second half, outscoring Glenwood by seven.

Fouls were a big part of the match. Creston starter Gavin Millslagle was sidelined for much of the game after logging three fouls in the first quarter.

With six minutes left in the game, three Panther starters were down to their last foul before fouling out.

With less than five minutes to play, the score was 50-50 when lead Panther scorer Jake Hoyt was fouled, sending a Rams player to the bench with his fifth of the night.

Shortly afterward, another Rams player fouled out and the Panthers were able to gain a 4-point advantage.

Senior Cael Turner hit a 3-pointer with a minute left to put the Panthers up seven, but the game was far from over.

Cael Turner puts up a contested three, sinking it to get the Panthers up seven late in the fourth quarter. Turner put up 18 in the conference match.

They came back to hit a shot from the field and Hoyt uncharacteristically missed two free throws, leaving the Panthers up five with 12 seconds remaining when the Rams took the ball down for a 3-pointer.

Glenwood called a timeout, needing only one more bucket to tie the game, but having only five seconds to do it on the Panthers' posession.

Turner was fouled in an attempt to get the ball back. He made both clutch free throws, putting away the close game.

Hoyt continued to lead the Panthers, putting up a double-double as he scored 23 and logged 13 rebounds.

He was dominant on the offensive glass, getting eight rebounds, often put back for points.

Seniors Cael Turner and Tony Davidson rounded out the Panthers' top trio, scoring 18 and 15, respectively.

Turner had nine rebounds.
