Panthers sign TE Jordan Matthews back to practice squad
The Carolina Panthers just made Jordan Matthews do a reverse Grandpa Simpson.
Per the league transaction wire, the ninth-year tight end has been signed back to the team’s practice squad. Earlier in the afternoon, Joe Person of The Athletic noted that Matthews was present at the beginning of Wednesday’s practice.
The 31-year-old pass catcher was shown the door on Monday, along with veteran safety and Charlotte, N.C. native Matthias Farley. Their releases would help make room for the additions of linebacker Tae Davis and offensive tackle David Sharpe, both of whom were signed to the active roster on Tuesday.
Matthews, a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2014, first joined the Panthers as a member of their practice squad on Oct. 25. He was brought up to the active roster prior to Week 10’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, where he played 19 snaps on special teams in the 16-13 loss.
