Panthers' rookie D.J. Moore cited for driving 113 MPH
Usually, when you’re an NFL rookie you do whatever you can to fly under the radar off the field, and whatever you can to make a good impression on it.
But a couple of current rookies apparently haven’t gotten that memo. Earlier this month, Cleveland Browns receiver Antonio Callaway was cited just before 3 a.m. for driving on a suspended license and having a small amount of marijuana (to which Hue Jackson decided the best course of discipline was to give Callaway more snaps in a game).
And now, a Carolina Panthers rookie got in some hot water, also just before 3 a.m.
113 MPH in a construction zone
According to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers receiver D.J. Moore, the 24th overall pick in this year’s draft, was pulled over for driving 113 miles per hour in a 65 MPH work zone two weeks ago.
“(Expletive), that car is going fast,” Trooper H.L. Bautista wrote in his report of the stop.
Moore was pulled over at 2:52 a.m., and said he was on his way to his home after the Panthers had returned to Charlotte from Buffalo, where they’d played in their first preseason game on August 9. Moore had four catches for 75 yards in the exhibition.
Moore was charged with speeding and speeding in a work zone at over 80 MPH. He has an October 2 court date.
‘We chastised him’
In his report, Bautista wrote that Moore was “polite and cooperative” during their interaction.
Carolina coach Ron Rivera doesn’t sound like he’ll discipline Moore.
“When it all happened, D.J. came to us right away and explained the situation. He was very remorseful. He understood,” Rivera told media. “We chastised him obviously. And he’s moving on. And it’s an opportunity to learn for him and for the other young guys. ‘Hey, you have a responsibility to the community.'”
Moore was the Big 12 receiver of the year last fall, after a University of Maryland school-record 80 catches for 1,033 yards and eight touchdowns.
