Panthers request head coaching interview with Bucs OC Dave Canales

The Carolina Panthers are doing their due diligence, and that’s especially true with the team they played the most recently.

The Panthers lost 9-0 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18, and now, they’re taking a look at the Bucs’ offensive coordinator. The NFL’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday night that the team has requested an interview with OC Dave Canales for the team’s head coaching position.

Canales is only a first-year play caller, but his body of work is encouraging for a team looking to get back on their feet. Canales has helped bring forth a renaissance with both Geno Smith in Seattle as his quarterbacks coach and Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay as his offensive coordinator, and it’s very likely that the Panthers at least are curious about what he could do with quarterback Bryce Young.

With all this said, don’t expect Canales to be distracted. After a fake Instagram account impersonating him made a post on his story about interviewing for the job, Canales not only confirmed that post was fake, but that he was also “locked in” for the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Canales will get another chance to potentially prove his worth to the Panthers and other suitors when the Bucs play the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round on Monday night.
