Palm Bay, Merritt Island fall to eventual champs in FHSAA state duals wrestling

Palm Bay and Merritt Island both won state semifinal matches on Friday at the FHSAA State Duals Championship in Kissimmee, but the two Brevard County high school wrestling teams bowed out with Saturday semifinal losses to eventual class champions.

Palm Bay won a 48-19 decision over Hernando late Friday morning in the Class 1A field. Merritt Island followed in the afternoon, 58-15 over St. Thomas Aquinas in 2A.

Palm Bay fell to Jensen Beach in the 1A semifinal on Saturday morning, 38-30, and Merritt Island fell to defending champion Lake Gibson, 72-6.

Pirates Shaver Jackson, wrestling at 120 pounds, and heavyweight Carlos Gerardino defeated ranked opponents among nine team wins as the team earned its state semifinal match against Jensen Beach.

Jackson won his match over fourth-ranked T.J. Rodier by an 8-4 decision. Gerardino won a 1-0 decision over Devin Williams, ranked sixth in his class.

Logan De Los Santos at 106, Ronald Theilacker 9132), Avery Jackson (145), Nathan Furman (152), Zachary Emery-Foster (160), Octavion Osby (182) and 195-pounder Caleo Carrera all won by pin for Palm Bay.

The Mustangs won 11 of 14 matches against St. Thomas Aquinas. Eddie Sears, at 132, and Nick Lesch, 182, both pinned state-ranked opponents. Kaden Barrial, Merritt Island's 106-pounder, Kyle Mulley (120), Seven Tornga at 170 pounds, Kaleb Ivie (195) and 220-pounder Bobby Ives also pinned their opponents.
