Palestine's Hudson Dear wins scholarship

Jan. 10—Palestine Wildcat senior Hudson Dear was named the male Community Hero of the month for January 2024, earning Dear a $250 scholarship. The award, presented in partnership between Chicken Express and Dave Campbell Texas Football, is given monthly to a student-athlete that exemplifies leadership characteristics on and off the court.

Dear has shown exceptional leadership capabilities in his time at Palestine High School, and has helped contribute to the success of the football and golf teams. While Dear would make the cut to be involved in the state championship golf tournament in 2023, placing 29th overall, it was his senior football season that really told the story of who Dear is as a leader.

In 2022, his junior year, Dear led the charge as the Wildcats starting quarterback, guiding his team to a 4-5 regular season record and a playoff berth, while throwing for 825 yards and four touchdowns. Dear would also be named as the district honorable mention quarterback. But, as he looked back on the season, he felt he could have done more. During the offseason, Dear exemplified the ultimate display of his "team over me" mentality, as he approached his coaching staff and volunteered to step away from the quarterback position. Dear transitioned from one of the most high profile, and sought after, positions in sports, to one of the most thankless positions on the field, defensive line.

PHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Lance Angel joined Dear for an interview with DCTF on Wednesday, recording a short segment that will air on when available. The monthly Community Heroes of the month, both male and female, also gain eligibility to win the Community Hero of the Year award, which will grant a $1,500 scholarship towards their secondary education.
