Padres sweep D-backs for 1st time since 2013
Left-handed starter Eric Lauer allowed one run on four hits with no walks over seven innings Wednesday afternoon, and the San Diego Padres scored all of their runs in the first three innings to record a 5-2 win over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Padres swept the three-game series to move back into sole possession of second place in the National League West. It marked the Padres' first series sweep over Arizona since June 14-16, 2013.
Four Padres -- Greg Garcia, Franmil Reyes, Eric Hosmer and Ty France -- reached base three times each for the Padres, who handed the Diamondbacks a season-high fifth straight loss.
Lauer completed seven innings for the first time this season and reached at least 100 pitches for a second straight start. He also hit a batter while retiring the Diamondbacks in order four times.
The Padres led 4-0 before Arizona had a baserunner.
Garcia opened the game with a single against Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly and moved to second when Reyes drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a deep fly by Manny Machado to right center, and both scored on Hosmer's two-run single to right.
Hosmer scored on France's two-out double that was in and out of the glove of left fielder Blake Swihart.
With one out in the second, Garcia doubled, moved to third on a single by Reyes and scored on Machado's sacrifice fly.
Kelly (4-5) gave up four runs on five hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The Padres made it 5-0 in the third on a single by Hedges, a sacrifice bunt by Lauer and an RBI single by Garcia.
Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar had a hand in both Arizona runs.
Marte singled with two out in the sixth and came around on Escobar's double into the left field corner. Marte opened the ninth with a double off Adam Warren and scored on Escobar's single.
Closer Kirby Yates, working three straight days for the first time this season, came on to retire all three hitters he faced to earn his league-leading 20th save of the season.
Garcia tied his career high with three hits. Reyes, Hosmer and Hedges all had two hits.
