Overwatch League homestand weekend sells out 4,500-seat Dallas stadium originally appeared on nbcsportsphiladelphia.com
The Dallas Fuel Ultimate Weekend (April 27-28) will mark the first time that an Overwatch League team will act as host to a set of games in its home city and many eyes from the esports industry and beyond will be on this event as it showcases the potential for the anticipated full implementation of the "localization model."
This event is the first of three tests that Blizzard is running for the future of the Overwatch League which will transition to a home-and-away game-based model come 2020. In terms of popularity, the games this weekend have already been a success in the area of sales with the 4,500 tickets for the Allen Event Center in Dallas, having been sold out in just over a week before the event begins.

After launching in January of 2018, the Overwatch League has been played out of the Blizzard Arena in Burbank, California, but come 2020, OWL teams will be taking up a more permanent residency in their affiliated home cities. With what is anticipated to be a region based home-and-away model, Overwatch League teams owners are have been working away at constructing/renovating a suitable area to call home.
While the Allen Event Center may act as the venue for this weekend's games, it is uncertain which venue the Fuel will claim as their home base. But for the Fusion, construction is already underway in Philadephia for an impressive $50 million arena. The 65,000-square-foot Fusion Arena constructed by Comcast Spector and The Cordish Companies will be located in South Philly and feature player training facilities, team offices and a high-tech 3,500 seat theater experience.
Geolocalization is a term that has been synonymous with the Overwatch League since its inception and has been a defining feature as it marks the first time an esports league would take on a city-based model mirroring that of traditional sports.
Following the Dallas Fuel Ultimate Weekend, the 2019 season will have two more experimental home games with the Atlanta Reign and Los Angeles Valiant as hosts of their own homestand weekends to be played out of their home cities in the final weeks of Stage 3 and 4 respectively.
Tickets for the Atlanta games spanning a weekend featuring four games a day are now on sale with prices ranging from $40 to $280.
