Even if they are nowhere near a playoff position, the Ottawa Senators losing one of their top defencemen for an extended amount of time still has to hurt.

In a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, Dylan DeMelo suffered a broken finger and will miss at least three weeks.

The 26-year-old has averaged 19:50 time-on-ice, setting a career high during his second year in Ottawa.

One of their key defenders, DeMelo has just six assists to his name this season, but has been a bright spot on this Senators team.

His pairing with Thomas Chabot has been able to produce some solid underlying numbers despite the level of where Ottawa is as a team. Now it will be up to head coach D.J. Smith to make the right lineup decisions for Chabot to continue his early success.

The Senators are sixth place in the Atlantic division with a record of 13-17-2.
