Non-sports medical reason has Kjerstad off O's fall league roster originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Orioles announced their 55-man fall instructional league roster Monday, a list that should get young players in the organization more time to develop and grow.
The camp will go through the end of October with a handful of top prospects in the organization like catcher Adley Rutschman and pitchers Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall.
"Our Instructional League camp allows us to further develop and evaluate young players in our system,” Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in a statement. “Our farm system’s recent improvement reflects the hard work of many people and the organization’s commitment to excel in domestic and international scouting and player development.”
One notable absence, however, was second overall pick Heston Kjerstad, who will not be at camp.
Elias told reporters Monday he wouldn’t be in camp due to a “medical non-sports related reason.” Each of the team’s other five draft choices will be in camp.
“It’s not great,” Elias told the media. “I think the fact that he is an advanced high-level college hitter makes it a little less concerning that he ended up not getting much organized activity this year. Looks like that will be the case. So that makes it, I think, a little more tolerable just because we feel he’s a pretty polished hitter and will be able to pick up next spring where he left off.”
The instructional camp will take place in Sarasota, Florida at the team’s Spring Training complex. Due to health and safety concerns, the camp will be closed to the public and media.
Orioles pitchers and catchers are set to report to Spring Training on Feb. 16 with a full-squad workout scheduled for Feb. 22.
“This group of 55 players will gain invaluable experience while in Sarasota this fall,” the statement continued. “We are also very proud to include 15 international participants in this group, featuring players from The Bahamas, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.”
