Oregon State QB Jake Luton discharged from hospital after scary injury (Update)
Update: 9/19: 1:35 p.m.
Oregon State confirmed that QB Jake Luton indeed has a thoracic spine fracture. The school said Luton’s status is “week-to-week.” With Luton out, senior Darell Garretson will be the team’s No. 1 quarterback.
The Beavers (1-2) are off this week before hosting No. 6 Washington (3-0) on Sept. 30 at Reser Stadium.

Oregon State had a scary moment in its game against Washington State on Saturday.
Beavers quarterback Jake Luton went down with an injury in the fourth quarter that caused him to be taken off the field on a stretcher and hospitalized. It was a frightening scene, but an Oregon State spokesperson told The Oregonian that Luton was discharged from the hospital later Saturday night.
That news was a big relief after a horrifying scene in Pullman where Luton was motionless on the turf for several minutes. From The Oregonian:
Luton appeared to be knocked unconscious after WSU safety Jalen Thompson hit him in the head following a 9-yard gain with 11:40 remaining and the Beavers trailing 49-16.
Luton stayed on the ground motionless for several minutes, during which multiple family members attending the game came to the field level. The 6-foot-7 junior college transfer had his facemask removed and gave a thumbs up from the stretcher as the cart with medical personnel took him to a local facility.
Late Saturday night, Luton sent out a tweet thanking fans for their support.

Oregon State did not have an official update on Luton’s injury, but his father apparently tweeted that Jake could have a “thoracic spine fracture.”
Luton earned the starting role for the Beavers after transferring to OSU from the junior college level. Before exiting Saturday’s game, Luton completed 22-of-35 passes for 179 yards in a 52-23 loss. Oregon State dropped to 1-2 on the year and have a bye before No. 7 Washington visits Corvallis on Sept. 30.
Darrel Garretson, who came in for Luton after the injury, will likely get the start against the Huskies. Garretson was a starter at Utah State before transferring to Oregon State, where he began 2016 as a starter before going down with a broken leg. Before the leg injury, Garretson threw for 617 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions in six starts. He went 2-of-2 for 20 yards and touchdown late in Saturday’s game against WSU.
