Oregon State Beavers win 3rd consecutive game with victory at Utah originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
Oregon State women's basketball has seemingly turned it around.
After struggling to begin the season before an extended absence away from the court due to COVID-19, Oregon State (6-5, 4-5) completed its first sweep of a road trip all season Sunday afternoon defeating the Utah Utes (4-10, 3-10) 84-74. Aleah Goodman led Oregon State with 21 points and five assists.
Yes, this is a game the Beavers are expected to win but the Utes did steal a game at Gil Coliseum back in December.
With the win, the Beavers are riding a three-game winning streak.
Here are the key takeaways.
The Beavers were dominant at times.
To end the first half, the Beavers went on a 10-0 run. Then to open the third quarter, the Beavers went on another 10-0 run turning a one-point deficit to a 19-point lead early in the second half.
While the box score doesn't track plus-minus stats, the Beavers were killing the Utes with Taylor Jones on the floor. She only saw 13 minutes of action due to foul trouble but in that short span had 15 points (6-8 from the floor) and grabbed six rebounds. Had she been able to stay out of foul trouble, this game would have never been in single digits during the second half at all.
Great third quarter defense.... when not fouling
While the offense clicked to begin the second half, the Beavers made it incredibly difficult on the Utes to score by contesting shots and forcing turnovers. In the end, the Utes finished the quarter shooting 14.29% from the field (2-14) and 0% from behind the arc (0-7).
However, the Utes did shoot 16 free-throws in the third quarter alone. Still, the defensive improvment was nice to witness.
Let Utah hang around.
When the Utes called timeout after being down 19 midway through the third, that should have been the game. Oregon State has too much talent to allow Utah to come back from that point, but it still ended up being a one-possession game in the fourth quarter.
The Beavers lost the fourth quarter 23-18 and that was with their final nine points coming from the free-throw line after intentional fouls by Utah to extend the game. But hey, a win is a win.
Taylor Jones scored 15 points in 13 minutes while dealing with foul trouble. Oregon State won points in the paint 34-16.
Talia Von Oelhoffen hit a big three-pointer to extend the Beavers two-point lead late in the game.
