Oral Roberts bests Coyote women after fourth-quarter surge

Jan. 11—VERMILLION — Grace Larkins' near triple-double wasn't enough for South Dakota women's basketball to keep pace with Oral Roberts at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Thursday night.

Larkins tabbed 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, but the Coyotes fell to the Golden Eagles 91-78 to fall to 1-2 in conference play.

USD led 70-69 with 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Oral Roberts finished the game on a 21-8 run, fueled by 14 fourth-quarter points from Taleyah Jones, while the Coyotes hit just 5 of 16 shot attempts.

Prior to the fourth quarter, USD's offense was efficient, and finished the game 42.4 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers. Larkins was 5-of-10 from the field and 10-of-10 from the free throw line, while Kendall Holmes was 7-of-15 from the field and hit five 3-pointers to lead the Coyotes with 21 points. Natalie Mazurek added 10 points, and Alexi Hempe notched nine points and five assists.

However, Jones could not be contained for Oral Roberts, as she finished with a game-high 37 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Hannah Cooper added 17 points.

The Coyotes (12-6, 1-2 Summit) return to action to face St. Thomas at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 in St. Paul.
